Ten high schools in the Maryland public school system will be offering a pilot course on LGBTQ+ history and culture next school year.
The course, which was unanimously approved by the county’s Board of Education, will be open to interested 11th and 12th graders who have previously taken U.S. History. In terms of content, the course will cover four dimensions of the queer experience: the factors that distinguish different kinds of identities, influential figures in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights, essential moments in our history , plus the myriad social and political challenges faced by our community around the world today.
“I think that we need students that identify as LGBTQ to see themselves and to know their identity is celebrated, not just accepted, and to know people like them have helped shape our history and culture,”Tiferet Ani, a social studies specialist, and the school district staff member responsible for spearheading the development of the course.
