If the U.S. Supreme Court eliminates the constitutional right to abortion by overturning Roe vs. Wade — as it is widely expected to do in coming weeks — Texas and at least 25 other conservative states are likely to ban most abortions.

She said that since the latest Texas law took effect, she has had to turn away about 40% of the women seeking abortions. “We’re poor in this area, so a lot of us don’t think, what’s the safest way to do it?” explained a 24-year-old named Lucía who works for a teaching certification program in nearby Edinburg. “Not having insurance, you’re scared you’re going to have to pay too much.”

Lucía sobbed as she explained that she would be having an abortion the next day — before the legal window closed. It all felt so rushed.Lucía, 24, who asked to be identified by her first name, cries at the McAllen clinic as she discusses how recent Texas restrictions left little time for her to decide whether to have an abortion.

Claire scheduled an abortion for the next day. It would cost a good chunk of the roughly $1,400 she earns each month as a substitute teacher and part-time health tech.“I know there’s some people who don’t even get symptoms right away,” she said. “So you know they might be too late.
