Opinion from Phil Boas: The new MLK statue that everyone hates does what art does best. It confounds.
Descendants of Martin Luther King Jr. gathered at the nation's oldest public park to dedicate a massive monument to the civil rights icon in Boston, where the leader first met his wife, Coretta Scott King. Another public-art disaster.
And with all my extensive public-art background, I’m here to tell the critics of the Boston Common King sculpture, you’re wrong.No, I’m not high.No, it’s not.It’s confounding in the way new things are, and if it isn’t new, it isn’t art. It’s Xerox. You don’t have to see the faces of MLK and Coretta Scott King. Their faces are now American icons and will be for centuries after we are gone. The artist is asking us to see more.And not just hands, but the chromatic scale of Black America in all its shades. The bronze sculpture changes dramatically with the light and makes it – judging by the photographs – a different experience from overcast to sunlight to floodlight.
Next, is the contrast with other King statues. Over the weekend, people were posting photographs of what a legitimate King statue should look like. There are many in the country, including the towering figure in white granite next to the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
