The UKHSA has warned that the XEC variant of Covid-19
Brits suffering from a common cold have been urged to 'stay home' as the UK sees a surge in several severe viruses, alongside the usual array of coughs and bugs. The 2024 strain of Covid, XEC, has led to an increase in hospital admissions over the past month, while cases of seasonal flu and RSV are also on the rise.
According to the UKHSA, approximately 1 in 10 Covid cases are now of the XEC variant. Dr Jamie Lopez Bernal, Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, stated: "COVID-19 is continuing to circulate, with a slight increase in hospitalisations over the past two weeks.
Emphasising the importance of hygiene practices learnt during the pandemic, she added: "I always recommend encouraging your children to practice good personal hygiene, including regular hand washing with soap and warm water. This helps to remove dirt, viruses and bacteria from hands and helps prevent a virus being transferred to surfaces, other people and objects, which can spread illnesses such as a cold, flu or norovirus infection.
