The Manchester Evening News visited the Houses of Parliament to see how some of our new MPs are settling in on their first week
They've spent six weeks fighting for a seat in Parliament - and in some cases, several years. But now the real work starts. Hundreds of new MPs descended on Westminster this week to start their new jobs.
Most of the new MPs will have to find somewhere to live London where they are expected to spend most of their week while Parliament is sitting. Some will also be looking for new homes within the constituencies they now represent. Almost every MP attended the first formal proceedings in the House of Commons on Tuesday to watch Sir Lindsay Hoyle get re-elected as Speaker. But this was not the first time the new MPs sat on the green benches.
For Lisa Smart, the new Lib Dem MP in Hazel Grove, standing up for constituents does not mean spending all week in Parliament. "When the House is sitting, I'll be here every week but not all week," she said, "certainly not. This started on Tuesday with Ashton-under-Lyne's Angela Rayner, Manchester Central's Lucy Powell and Wigan's Lisa Nandy among the first up. With the new cabinet now sworn in, the process will continue throughout the week with the newbies up last.
Having previously worked for the Labour Party, Mr Rand worked as a researcher for shopworkers' union USDAW before the election. He now lives in east Didsbury with his partner - a primary school teacher in Whalley Range - and one-year-old son, but the family plans to move to the Altrincham and Sale West constituency.
Bolton West: Phil Brickell Phil Brickell won the bellwhether seat of Bolton West, overturning Conservative Chris Green's majority of nearly 9,000 to win by 4,945 votes. He has been a councillor in Manchester's Baguley ward since 2023 and currently lives in the Wythenshawe and Sale East constituency - but he says he will have to 'review' his living situation and decide whether to move back to Bolton now he's the MP.
Born in London, his father was a bishop. He was privately educated and graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2000. The 42-year-old moved to the Cheadle constituency since 2017 and now lives with his partner Louise, a writer who used to be in Byker Grove. The couple are expecting their first child - a daughter - at the end of the year.
The 45-year-old was previously the chief executive of an international education development charity and has also worked for the Local Government Association. She attended a Catholic comprehensive school and later went to Durham University to study Maths. Leigh and Atherton: Jo Platt Jo Platt is also no stranger to politics. The former Wigan councillor, who represented the Astley Mosley Common ward for five years, replaced Andy Burnham as the Labour MP for Leigh in 2017 but lost the seat that was held by Labour for nearly a century in 2019.
The London-born son of North Manchester Jews attended a mix of state and private schools, moving around when he grew up. He was a policy adviser to Jeremy Corbyn when he was Labour's leader, but resigned in 2016 and later worked in party headquarters.
