Prosecutors said the 55-year-old San Pablo man made off with $4,000 in large bills.
DALY CITY – A 55-year-old San Pablo man has pleaded not guilty to robbing a bank in Daly City, prosecutors said.
On Wednesday, Cleophas Kirksey was arraigned on charges of first-degree robbery and theft of property. The robbery was reported Feb. 10 at the Wells Fargo inside the Lucky supermarket at 6843 Mission St., according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. Kirksey handed a note to a teller that said “give me all of your large bills; I don’t want 20s,” prosecutors said. The teller handed over a stack of $50 bills and a stack of $100 bills, totaling $4,000.Kirksey has five prior robbery convictions, including four for bank robbery, and was on federal felony probation at the time of the robbery. Surveillance footage showed him at the bank and his federal probation officer identified him as the robber, prosecutors said.
Five days after the robbery, Kirksey was arrested at his home. Detectives found stacks of $50 and $100 bills and clothing he wore during the robbery, prosecutors said.In addition to pleading not guilty to the charges, Kirksey on Wednesday did not waive his right to a speedy preliminary hearing, prosecutors said. That hearing was scheduled for March 3. The Public Defender Program was also appointed to represent him.
