A former detective constable with Greater Manchester Police was set to be dismissed for cocaine use after failing a routine drugs test. Chief Constable Stephen Watson ruled that her actions were 'incompatible' with the responsibilities of a police officer.

A Greater Manchester Police detective quit the force after a routine drugs test revealed traces of cocaine in her urine. Greater Manchester's chief of police has now ruled former detective constable Georgia Curley would have been sacked had she not already resigned. Chief Constable Stephen Watson, who chaired a misconduct hearing at GMP HQ, said he was 'presented with incontrovertible evidence of unlawful drug use ' and her 'offending behaviour was clearly unlawful'.

In a now published ruling, he said it 'must necessarily have involved a casual and corrupting association with a person or persons actively engaged in criminality'. 'What is clear to me is that this episode reflects behaviours which are simply incompatible with the responsibilities inherent in the office of constable,' he said. 'Her actions were deliberate and carried out in the full knowledge that her conduct was patently unlawful. A police officer is expected to target active criminals, not to consort with them. Had she not resigned, I would have had no hesitation in dismissing her from the service with immediate effect.' The ruling revealed Ms Curley was subjected to a drugs test on February 21 and gave a sample of urine. A week later, a 'positive result' was obtained. Benzoylecgonine - the main metabolite of cocaine - was found at a level of 481 nanograms per millilitre. The screening measurement prescribed is 300 NG/ML. Chief Constable Watson said he found breaches of the standards of professional behaviour, namely discreditable conduct and honesty and integrity, were proven and amounted to gross misconduct. Saying the objective of misconduct hearings 'must be to preserve public confidence in the police service', he ordered her name to be added to the College of Policing's Barred List, meaning she can no longer serve in a police force agai
