Raheem Sterling starred for Manchester City for seven years and is still connected to the city two years after moving to Chelsea
Former Manchester City star Raheem Sterling is inviting students heading to the University of Manchester this autumn to apply for three years of financial support and mentorship.
Sterling, who grew up in London and now lives there as a Chelsea player but spent seven years at the Etihad where he won four Premier League titles, started a scheme in Manchester and at Kings College, London to close the attainment gap for black British students after research in 2021/22 found that less than five per cent of all UK students on undergraduate courses were black.
After a successful first year, the scheme is open again for 14 students to apply for a scholarship that covers tuition fees, accommodation expenses and other essential educational costs to allow the students to get fully involved in university life. Anyone eligible who has applied for entry in September 2024 has until May 30th to apply for the scholarship.
“I’m delighted to hear inspiring stories from the students and to hear how the scholarship programme has helped to provide positive experiences during the first year of their course," Sterling said. "Through education, we can drive real social mobility and create long lasting pillars that will last throughout their studies, into future careers and beyond.
"I look forward to welcoming the second group of students into the scholarship programme and following their progress over the next few years.”
