After T.I.’s open letter to Lloyds Of London demanding reparations on behalf of the descendants of the American slave trade, the King of The South isn’t satisfied
While Lloyd’s of London acknowledges its role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the apology and plans to make amends lack action, which is precisely why T.I. penned a four-page letter in response expressing his dissatisfaction: “Although we appreciate you reaching out and again stating Lloyd’s is deeply sorry for its role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, we find Lloyd’s actions to rectify the situation to be admirable but insufficient.
He goes on to explain: “The concept of ‘leveling the playing field’ that you refer to in your letter is a concept that does not sufficiently address the 400-plus years of oppression, marginalization and inequality. It does not address in an expedient way how Lloyd’s intends to dedicate a considerable percentage of your $56 billion empire to fight the lingering effects of the ‘shameful role’ your company played in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
“Looking forward to keeping the conversation going with Lloyd’s,’’ T.I. told For The Culture, Forbes’ hub for Black and brown professionals. “I urge all descendants and all Black people in America who believe in the intention and the message of this call to action to go to UsOrElse.org to sign the petition. We owe this to our descendants and our ancestors.’’echoed a similar sentiment
, calling on U.S. companies to also consider providing reparations. This widespread discussion has prompted many companies to do more than just lip service. North Carolina City Council, for example, agreed to provide a form of reparations in an undisclosed amount to its 93,000 citizens. Only time will tell if other companies follow suit. The action is certainly a step in the right direction.
