Boris Johnson’s fury is the sound of a man shouting at the fire brigade as they extinguish his blazing underpants. The Privileges Committee report should be printed, bound and kept in school libraries – as a lesson in democratic accountability and the perils of lying. At 30,000 words, it is. Yet its power resides in a forensic account of the former prime minister’s deceit and verbal trickery.
The evidence is laid out methodically and with fairness by the committee of seven MPs, four of whom are Tory. Johnson’s tower of falsehoods has toppled onto him. Some of his denials, the committee found, “were so disingenuous that they were by their very nature deliberate attempts to mislead the House”.
