Bread is a kitchen staple but can easily turn mouldy and stale within days. A baker has shared her top tip for keeping bread fresh for longer, and it's not what you'd expect.

Bread can, frustratingly, turn mouldy and stale so quickly once you bring it home from the store. The culprit? It's likely the way you're storing it.

She shared her experience: "Years ago, we used to keep our bread in a plastic bag, in a drawer nestled in between the dishwasher and fridge.. And why should you keep your bread away from the fruit bowl? Certain fruits, such as bananas and apples, emit ethylene gas, which acts as a ripening agent. This not only affects the fruit but can also make your bread go bad much quicker.

She advised that while sandwich bread keeps well in a plastic bag to maintain softness, it's important not to seal the bag too tightly as this can lead to mould growth. For brioche rolls and soft buns, Emilie recommends paper bags due to their breathability but warns against letting in too much air, which can cause the bread to stale.
