While the long\u002Dterm care operator says it has apologized, the Saskatchewan Ombudsman said the company did not respond after several requests.

While her office welcomed the implementation of all recommendations — including an apology — Ombudsman Mary McFadyen said the operator did not respond to her after given several opportunities.

Prior to Extendicare’s statement, Seniors Minister Everett Hindley had said he hoped the operator would accept the recommendations. The ombudsman reported the long-term care facility wasn’t consistently screening staff for symptoms or taking required precautions. It reported noncompliance with mask guidelines, staff was ill-equipped to move residents and there was no contingency plan to replace staff who had to self-isolate.

“When we do a report, we always provide a draft report with draft recommendations to parties because when we make recommendations, we want them to be implementable,” she said. “We want the party to accept them and to implement them because that’s why we make them.” Hindley said he couldn’t provide a timeline on when the SHA will have full control, adding the process is complex and lengthy.
