A backpacking trip into the California wilderness turned into a harrowing three days.
During the descent, Ockenden reportedly injured her foot, forcing the pair to stop and pitch a tent. Teachman then activated his personal locator beacon, sending an emergency radio signal that was received by the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department at 3.18 p.m. on Nov. 7.
The San Gorgonio Search and Rescue Team's attempt to find the couple was hindered by the worsening weather. Police say that due to heavy rain, near-freezing temperatures and treacherous terrain, the rescue team was unable reach the victims until close to midnight. With no extraction possible, the rescue team instead chose to shelter in place with the victims. The following day, the storm continued to batter the mountains, turning the rain into snow and trapping the victims and their rescuers in the canyon. On Wednesday morning, the storm subsided and helicopters were sent back to the location, but the remaining cloud cover again prevented rescuers from reaching the victims dispute numerous attempts, police said. Authorities then widened the effort significantly by calling in another 25 alpine rescue personnel from the region.
