Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy puts a stop to one bleak Star Wars fan theory about the mysterious project occupying the prisoners at Narkina 5: 'It's totally nihilistic. I go, 'We're not that dark.''
Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy addresses the Narkina 5 prisoners' mysterious building project and debunks a particularly bleak fan theory. Andor premiered on Disney+ on September 21 and follows Cassian Andor on his journey from a petty thief to a prominent figure in the Rebellion. The most recent story arc saw Andor sentenced to 6 years in prison at Narkina 5 after being accused of vandalism.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with Collider, Gilroy debunks at least one theory about the mysterious project. Gilroy acknowledges that Andy Serkis, who plays Kino Loy, has claimed to know what the project is and suggests viewers should wait to hear the answer for him. However, he did offer one hint about what Andor's project is not. Check out his statement below:
Yeah. Well, maybe we'll have to just wait and see what Andy says. I heard one theory. Someone said, “My daughter sent me something: they're building something in the next room, and then they're taking it apart,” which is not true. It's totally nihilistic. I go, "We're not that dark." I guess we'll figure it out. Yeah. Yeah. To be seen.
The Death Star as a whole took 20 years to build. Hence, if the Empire is in the final stages of building the superweapon, it would make sense to make use of labor from the prisons. The extra labor necessity is especially understandable considering the enormous scale of the project, with the Death Star boasting a diameter of at least 140 kilometers.
It also suggests that the prisoners could really be building anything that the Empire finds useful. The Empire is known for using large scale technology, including countless imperial droids, AT-ATs, Star Destroyers, engines, and ships. Given the repetitive nature of the project, the Narkina 5 prisoners almost seem to be mass-producing something which supports the theory that they're making a specific droid or ship.
