Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley told supporters who gathered for the ribbon cutting on Sept. 24 that the courtyard symbolizes resilience and hope, even as the city of Oakland has struggled with crime and other social problems.
District Four City Councilmember Sheng Thao thanked two of her colleagues who couldn’t make it to the dedication, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and former Mayor Jean Quan. Thao also acknowledged those who bought bricks to help push the project’s fundraising over the top. An additional $25,000 is being raised for public programming, safety features and other improvements.Not all motorists are getting the memo about the new “No Left Turn” sign at the north end of Montclair Village Plaza. During the Sunday Farmers Market, every third driver seemed to turn left from Antioch Court onto Mountain Blvd. It’s a habit not easily broken; but it needs to be addressed now that the new pedestrian crosswalk bulbs are in place, making it hazardous to turn at the intersection.
