A new study shows that men appear twice as often as women in photos that accompany news stories posted on Facebook
site for news, and it's estimated that 43% of U.S. adults are getting news from Facebook. That's a lot of people who are getting the message that men are the primary newsmakers, and that's a problem. Not only does the predominance of men in our news feeds reflect the gender bias in our culture, but it will contribute to perpetuating that gender bias as well.
The researchers also subdivided the news stories into those relating to the economy, entertainment, immigration and sports, and found men outnumbered women in news photos in all four categories. For example, in Facebook news posts related to the economy, only 9% of images that depicted people, depicted women only. By contrast, 69% of these photos showed only men.
The study also found that more space in photos was given to men. Men's heads were bigger than women's in the photos. More precisely, the average male face was found to be 10% larger than the average female face in the news photos. In posts relating to the economy, women’s faces were a shocking 19% smaller than the average man’s face.
