Barnette Street and 10th Avenue will be the subjects of the experiment.
Published: Mar. 12, 2024 at 6:48 PM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - The City of Fairbanks is putting rubber to the road on a pilot project aimed at making downtown more bike-friendly.
The Fairbanks City Council passed the pilot project via a Monday resolution on a 5-1 vote; another version of the resolution would have limited the pilot’s scope to just Barnette Street, excluding 10th Avenue from the trial run. The council rejected option two after passing option one to avoid redundancy.
Councilmember Sue Sprinkle also appreciated the experimentalist spirt of the signs and stripes and what the changes could bring for non-motorized city travel. Councilmember Jerry Cleworth cast the lone no vote. He maintained cyclists and pedestrians almost always maintain the right-of-way, regardless of how well signage communicates those rules.
“There will be one contra bike lane heading north, opposing the traffic, and that’s going to separated by paint — yellow lines essentially, like the double yellow that you normally see, but wider and enhanced,” City Engineer Bob Pristash said in a Tuesday phone interview. As for the east to west corridor of 10th Avenue, that’ll see an adjustment called a “sharrow,” according to Pristash.
