Five family-friendly winter walks in Lancashire with stunning waterfalls, views from high towers and a bracing sea breeze
There's plenty of walking routes that are suitable for families, as we explore a different one each week for you to try. But this time, we have rounded up some trails that are especially wonderful in the winter-time, making sure to include ones which are either relatively flat and/or suitable for young children.
Darwen Tower This Lancashire landmark may be up high, but the route to it is steady and relatively easy to negotiate, with families regularly venturing to the top of the hill to take in views from the 85-foot tower's octagonal structure. The historic monument, which is also known as Jubilee Tower and has recently undergone extensive restoration work, sits at the top of Darwen Hill around 372 metres above sea level.
Gisburn Forest This Forestry Commission-run forest is part of the Forest of Bowland and is perfectly set up for families keen to take an a wintry adventure. There's vast green space and woodland and the forest is famed for its multiple walking trails, with varied terrain and sweeping, vast scenic views, while also having a route suitable for differing abilities, experience and ages.
Tolkein Trail Among the most popular walking trails in the county, the Tolkein Trail takes in spectacular Ribble Valley scenery and is said to have inspired the famous author's fantasy The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books. The circular walk begins at Hurst Green village and from here and the rest of the walk you'll stumble across reasons why JRR Tolkien drew so much inspiration from this area.
