Family of Gorton man shot dead by police in Australia allege officers waited seven minutes before giving him CPR
The parents of a Gorton-born man shot dead by police in Australia allege officers waited for around seven minutes before they gave him CPR at the scene. They also allege Luke Gilbert didn't lunge at them with a penknife he was carrying on a belt clip - or threaten them in any way at all.
Understood to have been working as a cabinet maker, Luke lived in Perth but had been travelling for five months, camping most weekends, and had been to a pub in the popular resort of Airlie Beach, Queensland, when the incident happened in the early hours of October 1 last year. In a statement to the M.E.N., they said: "We can now confirm the small penknife that he had on his belt which he used for work and camping - it is not uncommon to carry one as a tool in Australia, especially when driving vast distances and camping - was only in his hand because they'd asked to see what he had.
"Luke was loved by many, especially the community in Mandurah, Western Australia, where he grew up. He was a hardworking lad who had been travelling around Australia since May last year. Luke drove down to Airlie beach that day to help a friend with car trouble and decided to stay the night. Luke never came back."
"Both officers immediately drew their firearms and pointed them at Luke, escalating the situation very quickly," they added in the statement.
