Douglas Smith, 61, of Hagerstown, Maryland, was visiting family in New Jersey over Thanksgiving when he was struck and killed.

Smith was rushed to a hospital, but he had a severe head injury and died the following day while police and nurses tried to locate family, said his daughter, Rachel Robinson.“I understand that accidents happen, but leaving somebody to die alone on the side of the street is just unfathomable,” Robinson said. “It just doesn’t make human sense.”
Police spent several weeks combing through surveillance video from homes and businesses in the area for any leads with no success, said Paulsboro police Chief Gary Kille. Cameras on a building close to the crash scene were not working at the time, he said.“We need to bring closure to the family,” Kille said. “We need to talk to you.”
“The person who hit my dad is probably a nice, normal person that maybe was just scared and that over time it will weigh on them,” she said. “Our life was so altered by this and that little bit of closure really matters. It matters that somebody cares that this happened to him.”
