Hundreds gather to watch Argentina defeat France on big-screen TV in small park

Hundreds of soccer fans, many wearing face paint and a few who dressed their dogs in jerseys supporting either Argentina or France, braved temperatures in the 40s Sunday morning to attend a World Cup viewing party in North Park.

Argentina, which had substantially more fan support at the North Park event than defending champion France, blew a 2-0 lead late in the second half and then blew a 3-2 lead late in overtime. Deadlocked at 3-3, Argentina eventually prevailed on penalty kicks. Part of Barron’s family is Argentine, so Sunday’s win was particularly sweet. “We wanted to be with fans and watch the game here,” said Barron, adding that she started playing soccer right after she learned to walk.

“When people know what they want to do, they come out and do it, and they are here,” said Palaniuk, interim president of the North Park Business and Neighborhood Foundation. “I can’t think of a better venue to watch the final match — and with two amazing teams.” “World Cup is only once every four years and I think it’s cool having the crowd here, having it up on the big screen — being outside is kind of nice as well,” he said. “I enjoy it better here than in a closed-in bar that’s just kind of dark and dreary like bars can be.”
