Greens, a popular vegetarian restaurant in West Didsbury, is closing down after 33 years. The closure has left many loyal customers and fans devastated, as the restaurant was known for its exceptional food and innovative use of vegetables. The author reflects on their first experience at Greens and how it influenced their culinary journey. The news of the closure has sparked sadness and disbelief among the community.
I've had some of the best meals of my life at Greens in West Didsbury . The first time was 20 odd years ago now, and I was fairly green myself when it came to dining out back then. I'd never been to a vegetarian restaurant before that night, and it seemed awfully fancy. Particularly as my main experience of vegetarian food back in those days stretched as far as Linda McCartney sausages in the freezer aisle. It's fair to say that my first Greens experience blew my mind.
It opened my eyes to what could be achieved with food - like how could chef Simon Rimmer make vegetables possibly taste THIS GOOD. It would lead me on to explore and try so, so many different styles of cuisine across Greater Manchester over the decades that followed. So naturally, like thousands of other MEN readers and Greens fans, I was near distraught when I heard the restaurant would be closing for good in January after 33 years. How could somewhere as good as Greens, as always so popular as Greens, be closing down? But that's the situation we're in right no
