No charges will be filed in the death of a man who was fatally shot while police say he was trying to crawl through the window of a Birmingham home.
The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the death justifiable, said Birmingham police Sgt. Monica Law.The homeowner told police the intruder was trying to crawl through the window of her house. She grabbed her gun and fired a couple of shots, striking 29-year-old Jamel Nathan Thomas once in the chest.
Authorities said a wounded Thomas then ran a block to the Chevron on Bessemer Road where he collapsed at the front door of the store. A store worker called Birmingham 911 at 12:46 p.m. West Precinct officers arrived at the store and provided aid to the man until paramedics arrived. He was then transported to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:11 a.m.
Thomas’s death is the eighth slaying this year to be ruled justifiable out of Birmingham’s 127 homicides. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
