Health officials see Novavax’s protein-based vaccine as a valuable alternative for people who don’t want to take messenger RNA shots from Pfizer and Moderna.
The Food and Drug Administration authorized Novavax's updated Covid vaccine targeting the omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 for emergency use in people ages 12 and up.
The company said in a statement it expects a recommendation from the CDC"imminently." Regardless, all three shots are expected to help the U.S. combat the spread of Covid this fall and winter, when the virus usually spreads at higher levels. But it's unclear whether the company's new vaccine will protect against BA.2.86, a highly mutated omicron strain that health officials are watching closely despite its small number of cases. Novavax last month said it was still testing its vaccine against BA.2.86.
