WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is committing nearly $1.5 million to fund research on preventing algal blooms from forming on the Great Lakes.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars will be sent to researchers in the private sector and at multiple colleges, including Ohio State, University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University and Oberlin College, according to a news release from Kaptur’s office.$281,975 to improve “understanding of the synergistic impacts of acidification, temperature, total alkalinity, and nutrients on toxic cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms.

$296,205 to “enhance existing technology for rapid, portable, multiplexed detection of harmful algal toxins in the Great Lakes.”
