FELTON — A series of nine atmospheric river storms slammed the California coastline in late December into January and while the skies have cleared over Santa Cruz County, neighborhoods in Felton have been without power for weeks at a time and continue to suffer road impacts for the foreseeable future.
A massive tree fell into a home at Brookside Drive in Felton during recent atmospheric winter storms. .Betty Latshaw, who has been living in her home on Pine Drive since 1987, said she lost power around 1 a.m. Jan. 8 after a tree fell on a home at Brookside Drive, which is adjacent to Pine. As of 3:20 p.m. Thursday, her neighborhood was still without power, she said..
“We’ve had outages before and you know, five or six days is the longest that I remember,” Latshaw said. “Nothing like this.” Tostado wrote Thursday afternoon that crews hope to have power restored by noon Friday. As of 4 p.m. Thursday, the area was still without power, according to PG&E’s outage map. Chris Keller, who has been living at Brookside Drive for four years, said the street went dark Jan. 6 when a large tree wiped out a power line. Two additional trees fell within a few days, knocking out more lines and crashing through homes.
Seeing that the roadway was becoming impassible, Cook and his partner, Melissa Sexton, hopped in their Subaru Crosstrek but got stuck in a sinkhole before they could drive out. They then waded through knee-deep water with their belongings and caught a taxi into town. Cook’s Subaru is still stuck in the same sinkhole 25 days later.
