Book Review: In Laila Lalami's 'The Other Americans,' a hit-and-run death intensifies a family's feelings of vulnerability and displacement
The mood of Laila Lalami’s new novel, “The Other Americans” , is encapsulated in a short scene in an anger-management support group meeting that a character has been forced to attend after smashing his ex-wife’s car with a baseball bat.
A speaker prattles on too long, the others get tired of his endless sob story, words are exchanged, factions arise and, somehow, the support session has turned into a tense and heated standoff. The moderator has to ask one of the participants to cool it. “ ‘I am calm,’ she snapped.”
