She’s run the equivalent of 26 marathons since August, and she’s not done yet.
Last fall, fifth-grader Hailey Walker, 11, started logging miles in her physical education class as part of theprogram. Her P.E. teacher at West Lenoir Elementary, Sharon Abee, had signed Walker and some classmates up for the program that encourages kids to run a total of 104.8 miles—four marathons—during the school year. Walker knew she could do that, and also more.
“I didn’t have to push her or remind her what she needed to do in order to break the record,” Abee told. “She took it upon herself to ask me where she was and how many miles a day she needed to reach her goal.”Before schools closed earlier this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Walker and her Marathon Kids teammates would log miles during gym class, inside and outside. Walker says she likes to run on the track.
Walker doesn’t think about anything when she’s logging miles, which is part of why she likes running during tough times., designed for any speed and any distance.]Walker, who likes to set goals for herself, knows that getting out the door can be the hardest part. But once she gets moving, it’s always worth it.
