During this season of Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa, and of Auld Lang Syne stock-taking for all Americans, people of every heritage should heed the themes of these holy days: Good will, everyplace, among the mosaic of communities that makes up America -- and more prominent efforts by community leaders to resist and denounce racist and hate-filled tropes, against Jews and others, writes the editorial board of The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com.
For men and women of every persuasion, this time of year is a season of peace and fellowship and recollection. But that shouldn’t mask the fact that bigotry, prejudice and hate crimes still mar the world -- at a rising pace.
During a meeting last week with The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com editorial board, Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO and national director of the Anti-Defamation League , said the organization-- 2,717. That’s the greatest number in the league’s 109-year-history and nearly triple the number recorded in 2015, he said.
And though Jewish Americans comprise only about 2% of the nation’s population -- and antisemitic acts come in third after acts of anti-Black and anti-LGBTQ hate -- Jews were the victims of six of every ten religion-based hate crimes, Greenblatt said. Tellingly, the number of antisemitic incidents occurring in Ohio and tracked by the ADL has doubled in the past five years, he added.Nationally, “social media is a super-spreader of antisemitism and hate,” Greenblatt told us, a circumstance he said was enabled in part byIn effect, Section 230 shields Google, Facebook, and other social transmitters from liability for what third parties post on social media.
Especially troubling are signs that young people are increasingly being exposed to racist tropes -- not just on social media but also via certain computer games and celebrity examples.
