Mohammed Rafiq, 46, was part of a gang that produced the anti-anxiety pills, which are not licenced for use in the UK, 'on an industrial scale'.

The last member of a drug ring that stashed more than £3 million worth of unlicensed etizolam pills in a storage unit has been jailed.

Mohammed Rafiq, aged 46, was implicated in the narcotics gang that was busted after the individuals abandoned the Clio in a back alley in Stockton. PC Dave Richardson was preparing to release his police hound to track down the fleeing men when he heard "a cry for help" emanating from the vehicle. Surveillance footage and taxi service records led the authorities to gang member Michael Cornwell's residence in Sunderland, where they uncovered a drugs lab. In the kitchen, a cement mixer was being used to blend the etizolam components.

One of the men remains at large. Yousef Muflahi, 26, and Alarsh Said, 28, both from Liverpool, were "brought over as enforcers to provide threat and weaponry for the kidnapping," according to the prosecution. In March, Sufy Mohammed received the heftiest sentence of 12 years and nine months behind bars. Jake Mosley, 21, from Bransdale Close in Stockton, faced seven years and six months in prison.

Judge Chris Smith condemned Rafiq's actions, stating: "This is serious drug trafficking. Those who are involved in the drug trade exploit the misery of those who are addicted, for their own profits. The cost to society is brought about by other serious offending that stems from drug trafficking. Etizolam has been described as more dangerous than diazepam."
