Institutionalized racism has always ensured that Black people are not safe. The pandemic simply shed light on this chronic disparity. When it was reported in April that COVID-19 was killing us faster than any other group, although we only make up 13.5% of the population, I wasn’t surprised. Then we lost Ahmaud Arbery, Nina Pop, Breonna Taylor, and finally George Floyd.
As a child of Nigerian immigrants and as a lesbian finally feeling safe and self-integrated enough to come out later in life, quarantining alone has provided space for reflection about some of my life’s most tender moments.
