With history of luck, Spurs need another break
No, the karmic debt for Tim Duncan has not been repaid yet. It never will be. And granted, the Spurs have won two of their past four draft lotteries.
It’s not that they’re ungrateful. The organization might not exist here today if the fates hadn’t secured the perfectly timed arrivals of both David Robinson and Duncan, and even Gregg Popovich has acknowledged it “probably was all the luck we deserved for a long time.”Not as miserable as many. It’s been three years since they last made the playoffs, and five years since they’ve made any contenders sweat, and as of now there’s no telling when they’ll do it again. There’s no shame in this.
There’s almost certainly not a future Duncan in that group. But there might be a star capable of partnering with Dejounte Murray on a playoff team. But none in that group constitute the Spurs’ hitting it big in the draft, which they’ll need to do again at some point. The good news is they’ll have no shortage of opportunities this summer. And although their odds of success would be better with some lottery luck, destiny-changers can be found lower in the draft, too.
