Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin suffered defeat in Sunday’s general election, days before the country was set to enter NATO
Petteri Orpo, the leader of the center-right National Coalition Party, claimed election victory and was projected to gain about 20.8% with nearly all the votes counted. Ms. Marin’s Social Democratic Party came third with 19.9% of the vote, narrowly behind the right-wing populist Finns Party gaining 20%, in its best result to date.

She faced further headwinds after a leaked video, which went around the world, showed the then 36-year-old leader dancing exuberantly and drinking with friends.“During these dark times, I too need some joy, light and fun,” Ms. Marin said in a tearful address to reporters, adding that she had never missed a single work assignment. “I am human.”Photo:After she agreed to take a drug test, an official inquiry cleared the prime minister, saying she hadn’t neglected her responsibilities.
She faced stiff opposition from two rivals on the right, both of whom polled narrowly ahead of Ms. Marin’s Social Democrats ahead of the vote.
