Chime is building its own version of ChatGPT to speed up its engineers' work. The fintech's CTO laid out his strategy and why he's not going with OpenAI's or Google's generative AI offerings.
"The tools that are already out there are really good to show the art of the possible, but there's still a lot of questions that need to be answered around IP and ownership," Barrese said.
"It's a way for us to go ahead and use it in real-world situations without worrying about any kind of intellectual property or security concerns," Barrese added. He expects to be up and running with the startup, who he declined to name, within a few weeks and that the digital bank is"weeks and months" away from doing internal pilots that should last a quarter or two, Barrese said."Absolutely this year" Chime will be using the tech in real-world applications, he added. For the near future, Chime's generative AI efforts will be focused on engineer productivity. Barrese said he sees the tech as an assistant to the engineers and said the AI won't replace engineers.
