The 11 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center showed maximum sustained winds are at 85 mph with higher gusts.
NHC said Fiona is moving toward the northwest near 8 mph and the northwestward motion will continue through tonight, followed by a turn toward the north-northwest on Tuesday. On the forecast track, Fiona will continue to bring wind and rain to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The storm will past near or to the east of the Turks and Caicos on Tuesday.
Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours while Fiona moves away from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and over the southwestern Atlantic. Fiona is forecast to become a major hurricane on Wednesday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles and hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center. A weather station at Samana El Catey, Dominican Republic, reported a wind gust of 81 mph.The system will stay well east of northeast Florida and southeast Georgia, but swells from the hurricane will impact the beaches by midweek.
