Fast-moving wildfires at Sequoia National Forest could potentially threaten parts of the park, including its iconic groves of giant sequoia trees, officials warned
A pair of wildfires burning in the Sequoia National Forest in California prompted new evacuation advisories for the area, as challenging terrain complicated containment efforts.
More firefighters and resources are on the way to manage the twin blazes, officials said at a community meeting Tuesday night. The Tulare County Sheriff also expanded evacuation warnings for residents in the area on Tuesday. Park officials say that while giant sequoias have lived with fire for thousands of years, the warming climate and drought have helped create a tipping point. More severe blazes and longer fire seasons since 2015 have killed an unprecedented number of the trees, they said.
