, who is voiced and operated by comedian Robert Smigel, was filming a special featuring interviews with several people at the Capitol building for two days.
Colbert said the arrests by the Capitol Police"isn't that surprising.""The Capitol Police are much more cautious than they were 18 months ago and for a very good reason," he quipped in reference to the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in 2021. "If you don’t know what that reason is I know what news network you watch."He added that everyone was doing their jobs and acted accordingly."Everyone was very professional, everyone was very calm.
"The building was closed to visitors, and these individuals were determined to be a part of a group that had been directed by the USCP to leave the building earlier in the day," the statement continued."This is an active criminal investigation, and may result in additional criminal charges after consultation with the U.S. Attorney."Colbert called it a"fairly simple story" until it was covered by Fox News and reportedly compared to the insurrection.
