'Everybody loves the Flying Scotsman. It never occurred to me that I would ever get to drive it'
"This is mega, it's completely surreal," says driver Beth Furness, who was part of an all-female crew on the world-famous Flying Scotsman to celebrate International Women's Day.
"When I started in 1992, I was working on a little green tank engine with four wheels and here I am," Beth, from Network Rail, told LancsLive. "Everybody loves the Flying Scotsman. It never occurred to me that I would ever get to drive it. And doing it with an all-female crew is massive, because we have such an amazing crew.
"Work hard at school, make sure you get your maths and science behind you," Steph said, whose job on the hotplate is to shovel coal and make sure the pressure levels are steady to maintain power.
