A research volunteer for the Marine Mammal Center caught a distant glimpse of the whale in the San Francisco Bay on Feb. 8. And it looks like it's not alone.

Bill Keener, a field researcher with the Marine Mammal Center, said the massive mammal appeared to be at least 45 feet long and had some mud streaking along the side of its body — a sign that it had recently been feeding. “It looked like it was in pretty good body condition,” Keener told SFGATE over the phone Tuesday. “It was not one of the really emaciated ones we’ve seen in the past.”
Sightings of gray whales in the San Francisco Bay have become more common in recent years as they stop over between their breeding grounds in Mexico and their feeding grounds in the Arctic. Some experts think the uptick in whale sightings in the bay is actually due to an unexpected and significant series of deaths in the marine mammal population – thisin gray whales was declared by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in 2019.
Many of the whales were dying along the West Coast as they passed through each year, and researchers observed that they were abnormally thin – possibly because changes in the Arctic environment made it more difficult for them to find food.
