The museum will show makeup artifacts from Marilyn Monroe and Greta Garbo
Have you ever wondered what makeup looked like 10,000 years ago? The Makeup Museum, which is set to open in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District in May 2020, has your answer. Informing about the history of makeup and its societal impact, the museum will revisit thousands of years of beauty through rotating exhibitions that feature one decade at a time.
The Makeup Museum’s debut exhibition, Pink Jungle: 1950s Makeup in America, will start with the decade that marked the birth of the modern cosmetics industry with household names like Elizabeth Arden, Max Factor, and Sally Hansen. It was also a period in beauty that made an impact through pop culture and the growing media industry, from Marilyn Monroe’s red lipstick to Brigitte Bardot’s cat eye.
Industry insiders including Besame Cosmetics chief executive officer Gabriela Hernandez and makeup artists Rachel Goodwin and Vlada Haggerty are also involved with the museum. The Makeup Museum will be located at 94 Gansevoort Street for six months, with plans to open a permanent New York flagship and other sites throughout the U.S.
