A 17-year-old boy accused of the Southport mass stabbing has been pictured for the first time. Axel Rudakubana appeared in both Liverpool Magistrates' and Crown Court this morning, charged with the murders of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice Dasilva Aguiar.
However, the Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC ruled in favour of an application from the media to lift reporting restrictions in the case, allowing the defendant to be identified.Rudakubana turns 18 next Wednesday, at which point any order under Section 45 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 would have automatically lapsed. Media organisations can now identify the teenager as the suspect accused of Monday's stabbings.
A potential trial date is scheduled for January 20 next year, "allowing for a number of weeks if required". A plea hearing is meanwhile set for October 25.
