From Sunak's football gaffe to a major announcement on immigration - here is what we heard as the campaigns got underway

So here we are, day one of the general election campaign after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak finally set a date for the country to go to the polls.

And with Labour promising to scrap the scheme, which they call "unworkable", it means that there could be no flights at all. Despite the fact that no asylum seekers have yet been deported under the plans, it has still managed to cost the government nearly a quarter of a million pounds. Two rather easy questions came from two men who later turned out to be Conservative politicians. Ben Hall-Evans and Ross Hills were first identified as Tory councillors by Byline Times.

In fact the first day of campaigning saw two government ministers announce that they will be standing down after the July 4 vote - not exactly a ringing endorsement for the embattled Prime Minister.
