But there are lots of small things individuals can do to help protect the nature around them. Here are five ways you can help save Britain’s wildlife this summer:There are many changes you can make in your garden to provide a haven for local wildlife. “This increases insect abundance, which is important for many birds and small mammals,” he said. He also suggests placing nesting boxes for birds, and making small holes in garden fences to allow hedgehogs to come and go.
“Producing food has a cost; it doesn’t matter what that food is, but we should try to minimise the cost to nature and one way to do that is to reduce your red meat consumption,” says Tom Cameron, professor of applied ecology at the University of Essex. He says those who still want to eat meat could try switching to wild venison instead.
At this time of year in particular, dogs can disrupt migrating warblers, such as chiffchaffs and nightingales, that are nesting low in field margins and scrubland, he says. If a dog disturbs a nesting female, she can reveal her location to crows waiting to pounce nearby. Professor Pakeman also encourages people to join one of the many environmental charities that have “taken up some of the slack” as Government funding for nature has declined.Of course, there is only so much our individual actions can achieve. The decline of Britain’s nature will not be halted without prioritisation and funding from the Government.
