The flyovers were once a sign of ambitious regeneration
It has been five years since work began to demolish an iconic Liverpool structure that straddled the city centre for five decades. A enormous multi-million job to demolish the Churchill Way flyovers got underway in September of 2019. The 240-metre long flyovers were originally part of a city centre inner ring road scheme that was never built. The demolition of the Churchill Way flyovers brought down the curtain on a plan to transform traffic in the city that never came to fruition.
The demolition job started in September later that year and lasted three months, costing £6.75m to complete. Liverpool City Council's Cabinet Member for Highways James Noakes, said of the demolition: 'The Churchill Way flyovers are a relic of a cancelled highways plan from half a century ago and given the overwhelming weight of evidence against their safety, their removal is now the only viable option.
