Florida Democrats and gay and transgender activists rallied at the state Capitol Monday in opposition to legislation that would ban elementary schools from discussing sexual orientation in classes through third grade.
The rally occurred as the state Senate debated the measure ahead of a planned vote that would send the legislation to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has indicated he will sign it. The bill is expected to pass the Republican-controlled chamber. The bill, titled the Parental Rights in Education Act, has been dubbed the"Don't Say Gay" bill by detractors, which became a major theme of Monday's rally.
In recent months, two Florida couples sued their respective school districts after their daughters' schools secretly orchestrated transitions to a male identity. In one of the cases, the parents were not notified of the school's actions until after their daughter attempted to commit suicide for a second time.
Speakers at the protest on the Capitol steps blasted DeSantis's press secretary Christina Pushaw for saying the bill"would be more accurately described as an Anti-Grooming Bill" and characterizing any opponent to the bill as"probably a groomer."
