His legal battles led to a 2000 state law allowing riders over 21 to go without head protection as long as they had $10,000 in insurance coverage for accidents, according to the paper. Ron Smith and Brenda Volpe died from head trauma in August when he lost control of his bike and slammed into a trailer.“He thought everybody should have their own choice,” he told the paper.“He was a guy that you went to for advice,” Pruss said.The accident report noted that neither of them were wearing helmets, though couldn’t say for sure if it would have saved them in the crash.
