'I was like, what if there is a school shooting and this is where I die?' one student said.

An investigation has been launched after the weapon carried by a Florida police officer discharged yesterday in a school cafeteria while students queued for food.

Ferguson confirmed that an investigation has since been launched to determine exactly what had happened. He noted that the SRO has been temporarily reassigned, per protocol. It is believed the officer was leaning against a wall at the time. The firearm was a Sig Sauer 9mm. But some students of the school feared the worst as the single shot rang out, WFLA reported. “It scared me so bad I dropped my tray,” said an eighth grader named Madison.

The Pasco Sheriff's Office said in a statement yesterday: “We want to make parents aware of an incident today at Weightman Middle School in Wesley Chapel. On Twitter, the Florida Education Association campaigning group said: “This should serve as a cautionary note before the Florida House takes up #SB7030 which seeks to put more firearms on Florida's public school campuses.” The bill, a reaction to school shootings, was scheduled for debate yesterday afternoon.
