Weeks after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed 'Don't Say Gay' legislation into law, a LGBTQ+ middle school teacher was fired.

, Scott told the school that she was asked about her sexuality by her students after she had decided to teach a lesson on LGBTQ+ pride flags. Scott had reportedly come out as pansexual to her family the day before, which inspired her to be open about her sexuality with her students. "I wanted to show these kids that it's better to be open about ourselves than to hide it away," Scott told the school district in a written statement.

This statement conflicts with Gov. DeSantis’s public comments on childhood education and LGBTQ+ identity; before signing the law, that it was “inappropriate” to teach young children "they can be whatever they want to be" — in “any place, but especially [in] Florida.” Scott says she was instructed by school officials to destroy the flags that students made in her class, and she did so. “I went over to the recycling bin. I grabbed all their flags and all the kids were staring at me. And I crumbled their flags in front of them,” ScottAccording to school records, a complaint was made by a parent about Scott’s lesson the day it happened, resulting in her firing.
