Multiple organizations with ties to the Turkish American community are raising awareness and collecting donations to help people who were affected near the Turkey-Syria border early Monday.Hojun ChoiNusin Van Winkle knows how terrifying it is to experience an earthquake — she was in Turkey in August 1999, when a 7.6-magnitude tremor hit Kocaeli province, just east of Istanbul, and caused more than 18,000 deaths.“The ground is shaking underneath your foot, there is no safe place,” she said.
“Rescuers were able to get to the area but they said they need bulldozers to move away the rubble,” Van Winkle said.Arlington resident Belinda Douglas, 17, said her family has been trying to keep up with relatives in Malatya, Turkey, who were displaced by the earthquake and are without many basic necessities as they deal with near-freezing temperatures. She said her family in North Texas has not been able to wire money to them.
Saduman Gurbuz, president of the Turkish Society of Texas, said her organization is holding a Turkish cooking class Sunday to raise money to send to Turkey. She said she knows multiple Turkish Americans in North Texas with family members who are trapped by the rubble. Sipahi said he is communicating with the Turkish consular office in Houston and the embassy in Washington, D.C., to find ways to send supplies to Turkey. The group is also looking for more donation drop-off locations in North Texas.
Bahadir Han Koseli, who lives in Rockwall, said hundreds of people have reached out to him in response to Facebook posts that he has been publishing with information related to local relief efforts.
