The giant mansion — complete with volcanic rocks, waterfalls, pool and a railcar — was the dream of an eccentric who made his millions in seat belts.

On the southern tip of an ultrawealthy little island on the San Francisco Bay sits a notorious plot of land with one of the best views in the world. Looking over the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco skyline, the one-acre shoreline plot on Belvedere Avenue known as the Lava House was meant to be a paradise, but turned into a long, rocky and possibly cursed saga.

Ganz’s plans were unanimously blocked, so he tried and failed to sue the city, and subsequently submitted new plans to build an unfathomably big 31,570-square-foot home with a seven-car garage. All the while, trucks spewed yet more concrete and landscaping onto the unrecognizable shore. “It’s not too different from someone parking a cement truck next to your home and running it for 17 years,” neighbor Ted James told reporters.
